Peter Jennings

Peter Jennings passed away over the weekend. The big "C" finally caught up with him after years of smoking. It was disappointing news for sure. I met Peter Jennings once. Several years ago he was the master of ceremonies for the Trenton Teapot Festival Parade. His wife was a relative of a socialite family in Trenton and they were invited down for the festivities. After the parade several of us including Peter Jennings were invited to a luncheon with the mayor, police chief, etc.,. . . . He and I talked about tv journalism and his background in radio. He was very gracious and even gave me his phone number in New York. "If you're ever in town. . .", he said. Of course I never called, but I doubt he would've minded. Classy.

I liked Jennings and will miss his work. It can be argued that Rather and Brokaw may have had agendas of their own...but I believe Jennings was trying to hit the mark of fair but tough journalism.

The era of the "Big 3" is now over in any case.
